Leading the special events team, provided the opportunity to create more than a successful sporting event. We created the pathway for a cultural change for persons with intellectual challenges. The World Games brought together 10,000 athletes, 40,000 volunteers and 150,000 attendees from 136  countries in New Haven, CT.  The games provided the momentum for legacy programs in housing, education and community infrastructure through on-going policy changes and program development throughout Connecticut. It was an honor to work On the America’s Promise to our Future with Colin Powell and Elizabeth Dole to develop a program for promoting volunteerism and commitment to youth programs with General Mills and the Points of Light Foundation. The program showcased over 200 volunteer organizations for visibility and recruitment efforts and hosted General Powell, Elizabeth Dole and community leaders at a day-long event to encourage civic engagement and the impact of volunteers on for youth development.

We designed and implemented the OPSAIL 2000 CT, a Tall Ship event to celebrate Connecticut’s Millennial.  As an act of Congress, this was more than a waterfront festival:  relationships were formed and networks developed through on-going cross-cultural programs, business and diplomatic relationships were initiated and strengthened through the non-threatening environment of a global celebration, and infrastructure for hosting large scale maritime events were permanently built along New London’s waterfront. A million visitors arrived for Connecticut’s primary millennium event, held in New London Harbor and featuring more than 40 tall ships from around the world. We oversaw a budget of $6.2 million, 300 contracted personnel and 20 staff. The resulting economic impact was $151 million.
